Mechanical watches are tiny machines. As with any machine they require periodic attention to maintain their ability to run with precision. We call this maintenance "Cleaning and Ordering".
The oil within a watch begins to break down over time as it becomes contaminated with minute dust particles. Upon breakdown the oil leaves behind a gummy residue so that, rather than providing the needed lubrication, it actually hinders the smooth running of parts and can lead to wear.
When a watch is to be cleaned, we first disassemble it. This is the only true way to insure that all the parts are entirely clean. After disassembly, the parts are put into a watch cleaning solution that chemically removes all traces of oil and dust. Along with the chemical process there is ultrasonic agitation to rid even the smallest cavities of residue. After thorough rinsing and drying, each part is inspected and polished as the watch is assembled. Any worn or broken parts are replaced or repaired.
During assembly, numerous adjustments are made to aid in the smooth running of the watch. One of the most rewarding aspects of watch making for me is the final assembly of the balance wheel. If everything is in order, the watch begins to beat rhythmically as though I have brought it back to life.
Oiling the watch may be the most critical part of the whole procedure. The proper oil to the right place in the right amount is a judgment made by the watchmaker using the best of his skill and sensitivity.
Final testing is done on an electronic machine which, in addition to showing the accuracy of the watch, can help diagnose maladjusted parts.
How long a watch will run between cleanings is somewhat dependent on the quality of the watch. Better watches have cases designed to keep dust out as much as possible. As a general rule, cleaning and ordering is suggested every two to three years. Please realize however that many individual circumstances contribute to that rule, including the care you give it.
When well cared for, that mechanical watch of yours or your father's or grandfather's can run as well as when it left the hands of it's maker, and can find itself many years from now in the hands of your grandchildren. What a remarkable little machine!
Please know that the care and appreciation your valued timepiece needs and deserves is available at the Clock Works of Chattanooga.
